Nicotine-Free Cigarettes a New Aid for Quitters
Almost all people smoke cigarettes and even minors like the cigarette taste. But recently was made a new smoking product but a free-nicotine cigarette, because nicotine is an addictive ingredient found in each cigarette. The main goal of this new smoking product is to protect the minors’ health.
A recent study conducted by the University of Minnesota’s Transdisciplinary Tobacco Use Research Center found that nicotine-free cigarettes are effective in preventing prolonged cigarette use among smokers.
Researchers investigated 165 middle-aged men and women who smoked cigarettes for an average of 15 years. They also compared the study results among three groups that used nicotine-free cigarettes, low-nicotine cigarettes and nicotine tablets.
All the participants in the study used these products for six weeks and after the investigation end, were administered lung and urine tests. After all tests, researchers found that of the 53 subjects given nicotine-free cigarettes, 19 remained smoke free, while only 7 of the 52 low-nicotine smokers were able to quit smoking following the trial period.
Dr. Dorothy Hatsukami, the study’s main investigator, said that researchers discovered that nicotine-free cigs were as efficient as nicotine lozenges by making smokers to quit, because the rates of cessation were approximately equal.
Nicotine-free cigarettes are at present not available for sale in stores in the United States but can be found online, via internet. Why is it called nicotine-free cigarettes? Only one answer can be accepted, because while most cigarettes contain little more than a milligram of nicotine, nicotine-free cigarettes contain 0.5 milligrams and low-nicotine cigarettes contain 3 milligrams.
Hatsukami said the simple act of smoking seemed to be enough to cut smoking symptoms among the investigated smokers. For example Bill Ryan, sophomore physics major, said that he has tried to quit smoking several times. ”I’ve tried to use nicotine patches, but they didn’t really have an effect on me,” Ryan explained. After receiving federal influence funds, researchers will do a similar experiment with the addition of a nicotine patch too.
